May brings flowers, pastels and on the first Monday in May, the Met Gala. As stars took to the proverbial red, carpet that was actually white and blue, many broke the number one unofficial rule – the dress code. This year’s, Met Museum’s Costume Institute honored Rei Kawakubo, founder, and designer of Comme des Garçons and Dover Street Market.

Comme des Garçon (french for ‘like some boys’) came on the scene by way of Tokyo in 1969. The aesthetic is avant-garde and meant to create a statement. Known for its interesting use of silhouettes, unconventional mix of colors and androgynous pieces last night’s looks were highly anticipated.

From Blake Lively, Zoe Kravitz to Nicki and Rihanna to The Kardashians, Serena, J.Lo and A. Rod, Mary Kate and Ashley, and oh, Puff and Cassie too, stars from all ilks and industries go to great lengths to shine (or sit).

Most didn’t follow the evening’s theme yet some still managed to wow the crowd. Here’s a roundup of some of our favorite rebels:

The exhibit, Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between, will be on view at the Metropolitan Museum of Art from May 4 – September 4, 2017.
